Layoff Trackers are the new Normal

As the pandemic continues to gut the labor market a new crop of web sites are rising up to track the bad news but help those affected in the process. We are also seeing individual companies getting into the act by sharing who was let go through online spreadsheets. It’s a trend I expect to continue in 2020.

AirBnb is one of the latest companies to do just that. CEO Brian Chesky said in a blog post that they are going to create an Alumni Talent Directory — “a public-facing website to help teammates leaving find new jobs. Departing employees can opt-in to have profiles, resumes, and work samples accessible to potential employers.”

But since the start of this year, perhaps a foreshadowing of what was to come, at least three new layoff tracker websites have emerged to help those affected by layoffs: Layoffers.com, Layoffs.fyi and Drafted.us, here’s a look at what they offer.

LAYOFFERS

LayOffers.com is a community site that tracks layoffs to support workers  and connect job candidates with recruiters at no cost. Tech executive, Jeffrey Jewett, founded the service in early 2020 with a mission to help one million displaced workers.

It features:

  • Company directory where people can discuss potential layoffs anonymously – like Glassdoor or Indeed focused on layoffs with a Reddit style company discussion around recent layoff events, provide reviews on their outplacement services, and report on the company’s outlook.

  • A candidate explorer where recruiters can find layoff victims from specific companies and set up criteria specific alerts that trigger notifications once candidates join and match this criteria.

  • Job board where layoff victims can find newly posted jobs that haven’t been frozen due to economic uncertainty.

  • A live layoff list where users are submitting layoffs in real-time

  • A support forum where users can provide mental and emotional support to one another.

LAYOFFS.FYI

This site is just a tracker and you can search it by company name to find layoffs or get on their email list. Most of the companies are tech startups. They link to a spreadsheet of laid off people under each blog post. Of the three this is my favorite for its simplicity and how it links straight to each spreadsheet.

DRAFTED

Startup, Drafted, has created a way for those affected by Covid-19 layoffs to be found. It’s called Layoff Network by Drafted and it works by letting friends nominate their friends to be included into a database of people looking to be hired. Think of it as a free reverse job board. For layoffs users can submit tips and browse layoffs via a map.
