I like to point out solid examples of well written job descriptions whenever possible because for most employers, they are still a source of concern. They struggle with writing them. But in this post you will see a solid example of how to write one. I call this example the “Timeline Job Description”. Published on the Toptal careers site.
Let’s break it down;
The page has a clean modern look to it. I like the right hand sidebar which uses a few keywords to sum up the skills required. Ii also has the apply button above the fold which leads to more conversions. The job is remote ( great selling point) so they say that in multiple places for emphasis.
The middle of the job description is my favorite part. It walks the candidate through the first year of the job in an easy to read timeline.
This is a great way to structure your listings because it’s a template you can follow again and again. It’s also more interesting to candidates than the typical duties and requirements standard now so prevalent.
As we scroll down the page we have even more interesting content to entice seekers.
Yes! I can see my potential boss. This is an element that more job descriptions need. As a potential candidate I want to know up front who I’ll be reporting to.
The page goes on to mention more information about working at Toptal followed by a simple apply form at the bottom.
If you can do it, always put the apply form on the same page. It will lead to more conversions.
